The University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of the state universities in Ghana. It is located 12 km north-east of Accra in the suburb of Legon. About 24,000 students are enrolled at the university.

It was originally founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast and was closely linked to the University of London, which also awarded degrees.
It became independent when it was granted university status on 01 October 1961.

Initially, the research and teaching focus was on the humanities and social sciences, agriculture and medicine, but this was expanded to include technology-based sciences as part of a national education reform.
