Gender Studies as a specialisation

The interdisciplinary specialisation Gender Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy allows students of the cooperating institutes in the BA/MA to specialise in Gender Studies. Students receive a certificate for successful participation. The languages of instruction are German and English. 

At least one of these main topics must be covered by attending the courses:

  • Analysis of historical and contemporary gender models 
  • Contemporary cultural-historical and socio-political contextualisation of theories related to gender identity and/or sexual orientation  
  • Introduction to Feminist Theory/ Masculinity Studies
  • Introduction to Queer Theory/ Diversity Studies 
  • Critical Whiteness-Studies

Four courses with a gender focus must be completed as prerequisites for the award of a certificate. Achievements made at external institutions can be recognised and credited after review, if applicable. Achievements made at external institutions can be recognised and credited after review, if applicable. 

The students must acquire qualified credits (study achievements) from courses with a gender focus in accordance with the requirements. It is also possible to write theses (Bachelor's/Master's) on a topic of the study focus, provided that this is permitted by the examination regulations of the subject in question. Corresponding additional achievements are evidenced on the certificate. 

A time frame of four semesters is recommended for the specialisation.
